A flexible training room: folding desks on castors, relaid in five minutes

In a lot of organisations the training room is booked solid all week: Monday is induction for new staff, Wednesday is a brainstorming workshop, Friday it becomes the all-hands meeting room. The problem is that with fixed desks, every change of layout means an hour of heavy lifting and a sore back. The answer more organisations are choosing is training desks that fold and run on castors, so one person can relay the whole room in a few minutes.

Why folding desks on castors make a multi-purpose room work

A training desk with a folding top nests against its neighbours using only a few tens of centimetres of depth each, so the same room goes from a class of 30 to a clear hall for a team activity straight away. The castors mean one member of staff can set the room up alone without waiting for the facilities team, and when the session ends everything rolls neatly against the wall — leaving nothing for whoever booked the room the next day to deal with.

Four layouts you can switch between in minutes

  • Classroom — rows facing the screen, for lectures and any session where people take notes
  • U-shape — enclosed on three sides so the trainer can reach everyone, ideal for hands-on workshops
  • Group — desks joined into islands of four to six, for brainstorming and group activities
  • Theatre — every desk folded away, chairs only, which seats the largest audience

What to check before you buy

The most workable standard top is 1600×600 millimetres, which seats two people and combines into a range of layouts. The top should be 25 millimetres thick so it stays rigid and does not sag in the middle under constant use, and a melamine surface resists water and scratches from heavy rotation of users. WORKSTATION training desks come with a choice of three frames — Q1 in black, Q2 in white, and Q3 in white with an under-desk shelf — paired with tops in three shades: Wood Stain, Cherry and Bright Ash, to suit the tone of the room.

Keeping the room ready to use

Decide on one standard layout for the room and post a plan of it behind the door, so every team can put it back the way they found it. Keep one wall clear as the parking bay for folded desks, and have the booking sheet ask which layout is wanted, so whoever is in before has time to change it. Do that and a single training room does the work of a classroom, an all-hands space and an events area — earning every square metre you pay for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of a training desk?

The usual size is a 1600×600 millimetre top at the standard 750 millimetre height. It seats two people and combines readily into classroom, U-shape or group layouts.

How many desks do I need for 30 people?

With two people to a 1.6 metre desk, about 15 desks in a classroom layout. Allow at least 80–100 centimetres between rows so attendees can get in and out easily.

How do I look after folding desks on castors?

Wipe the tops regularly with a damp cloth, avoid resting heavy items on desks that are folded away, and roll them back into a single line against the wall after use. A water- and scratch-resistant melamine top will keep looking new for years.
