The executive desk is usually the largest piece of furniture in the room. Too big and the office feels cramped and awkward to walk through; too small and it neither looks the part nor holds what you need. The trouble is that most people decide from a product photo without ever measuring the room. This article works through the clearances to allow, a table matching desk sizes to room sizes, and the details worth checking before you order — so the desk fits both the space and the way you work from the day it is installed.
The one rule that matters: you have to be able to walk around it
Before you look at desk sizes, look at the floor you will have left once the desk is in. Office designers work to these figures: at least 90–120 centimetres behind the desk so the chair can roll back and you can get in and out; 90 centimetres or more in front for visitor chairs; and no walkway narrower than 80 centimetres. The simplest trick is to mark the desk's footprint on the floor with masking tape and walk a lap around it. Nothing prevents a bad purchase better than that.
Matching desk size to room size
Once you know the minimum clearances, use this as your starting point.
- 9–12 sq m — a 1.6 metre desk, right for a manager's office or a compact private room
- 12–16 sq m — a 1.8–2.0 metre desk, the popular size, with room for two monitors and paperwork
- 16–20 sq m — a 2.4 metre desk for a full executive look, still leaving space for a credenza and a small seating corner
- 20 sq m and above — a 2.5–3.2 metre desk for senior offices with their own meeting area
Leave room for the cabinets and everything else
The common mistake is to measure the room and then order the largest desk that will fit, forgetting that an executive office also needs a cabinet behind the desk, a credenza beside it, or a sofa for visitors. Sketch the whole room first and fix the desk size last, allowing around 40–45 centimetres of cabinet depth plus an arm's length for the doors to open. Note any columns, low window sills or doors set off-centre while you are at it — small features like these affect where a desk can go far more than people expect.
